WHALE WATCHING IN MENDOCINO

The
coast of California’s Mendocino County from Point Cabrillo
to Fort Bragg which geographically bows out into the Pacific currents
makes this stretch of beautiful rugged shore uniquely shaped to provide
some of the best views of swimming whales from the shore or whale watching

Whales migrate
north every year from February
to April in pods at the rate of dozens an hour, usually reaching a peak
in March, with some pods of 20 whales at a time. The
area provides a wide variety of B&B's, motels and hotel lodgings for whale viewing with The
whales swim close enough you needn’t even leave the comfort of
your hotel or bed & breakfast porch or balcony hot tub with a wine
in your hand.
Wine Festivals and Whale Boats
And with Mendocino’s
Wine region growing in popularity it’s a perfect time to combine
a little wine tasting with your whale watching. Two Festibvals are
held in Mendocino and Fort Bragg in March.
Mendocino
Whale and Wine Festival in March
Fifteen wineries and local merchants participate in the Mendocine Wine
and Whales festival, with wine tasting, food, art galleries and events
for the family with a free trolley. The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, three
miles north of Mendocino, offers activities on Saturday and Sunday of
both festivals, including games for kids, information on the shipwreck
the Frolic, lighthouse history and gray whale migration. You can walk
along the Mendocino Headlands to see the whales.
Fort Bragg Whale Festival
in March
In Ft. Bragg
the emphasis is more on beer than wine with almost 20 local area micro-breweries,
offering
tastes of their best ales, stouts and
pilsner beers. Other events are 5K and 10K walks and runs Walk on the
headlands, along with a classic car show, arts & crafts fair, chowder
tasting, art exhibits and guided whale walks at the Mendocino Coast Botanical
Gardens and MacKerricher State Park.
