KAUTZ IRONSTONE VINEYARDS
Wine Tasting Entertainment Park In Sierra Nevada
Going
beyond the simple wine tasting room, Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys California
has become an entertainment destination for wine lovers and
the whole family. John Kautz started producing wine grapes in 1948 in
Lodi, California. Along with winemaker Steve Millier (who also has his
own wine brand) Kautz Wines eventually turned into Ironstone. In 1989
they dug a cave from the limestone and hard schist of Calaveras County
near Murphys California (see MURPHYS
HOTEL Presidents,
Robber Barons and Highwaymen) for wine aging
caves.
Since then, Ironstone Vineyards has grown into the largest winery - entertainment
complex in
the state.
The Ironstone Vineyards tasting room features a bar which traveled around
the horn in 1905 and a delicatessen for enjoying its fine varietals with
gourmet sandwiches. A popular location for weddings and events in its
elegant banquet facilities are serenaded by a massive pipe organ. Musical
and theatrical performances are offered throughout the year. The Heritage
Museum, jewelry and book store occupies a second building on the complex,
with the largest crystalline gold leaf specimen in the world on display
along with local history and culture exhibits popular with school tours.
The whole complex is nestled in a well maintained grounds among the oaks
of the rolling hills with beautifully landscaped gardens.
Ironstone
is now a well known national wine brand and its home has become a popular
destination in the Calaveras wine growing region. You can purchase
wine by the bottle, or get discounts of up to 20% on case purchases with
extra discounts on the featured “Wine Of The Month,” and
a membership-only wine club. Complimentary Winery Tours are offered,
starting in the Tasting Room by the magnificent cozy fireplace and including
the now famous Kautz wine caves. And
after tippling a few, try your hand a gold panning on the creek bed which
first attracted travelers
to
the area in the “49er” gold
rush. The Ironstone Winery is located on Six Mile Road between Highway
4 and Murphys and is open all year. In summer, check out the Ironstone
Concert Series of music and wine, with tickets going on sale in
May. In October, during harvest time, look for the Harvest
Home Festival weekend held at Ironstone1. © Bargain
