WALT
DISNEY CONCERT HALL
Audio and Guided Architecture Tours and a free Concert?
Downtown
Los Angeles has not been known as a tourist destination for its spread
out sprawl of districts, but since the addition of the Staples Center
and L.A. Live (LA
Live Entertainment Center and
Grammy Museum) more social activity of the city is rising among the
tall buildings. What
to do in downtown Los Angeles? The Walt Disney Concert Hall is now
one of the iconic landmarks of the city’s downtown, unmistakable
for its glistening elegant twisted silverized box forms designed by
Frank Gehry.
Opened in 2003, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, built with an endowment
gift by Lillian Disney, is the current home of the L.A Philharmonic,
having moved over from the Dorothy Chandler Chandler Pavilion. Located
next to and part of the Music Center complex of theater venues and so
near the Los Angeles courts that its underground parking is used for
Juror Parking, the Disney makes for a spot to visit in the daytime for
a free tour.
Tours
of the Walt Disney Concert Hall are offered as both a free self-guided
audio tour, or a paid group docent-led tour. Check-in at the desk in
the main lobby for a self-guided tour, or call ahead to reserve a spot
in the guided tour. The audio tour is narrated by the voice of award
winning actor Jonathan Lithgow, with insights from the architect Frank
Gehry himself and other contributing voices. The tours take 60 minutes
and are offered on most days. The tours don't include the Concert Hall
auditorium because of rehearsals and performances, so if you want see
inside the theater, you have buy a ticket for a concert, and probably
dress better.
If
you just want to hear a concert performance without a ticket, you can
get a snack in the Concert Hall Café, with fresh
salads, cheese plates and sandwiches, or daily hot entrees, beer and
wine. The music of the L.A. Philharmonic is played through the sound
system when a performance is underway. A 90 minute guided tour of all
four of the Music Center venues, the Ahmanson Theatre, Dorothy Chandler
Pavilion, Mark Taper Forum and Walt
Disney
Concert Hall are also offered as the Symphonian Four-Theater Tour,
reserve ahead for times.
