VALCARTIER VACATION VILLAGE
Quebec’s Family Winter Playground
If
inner-tubing on winter snow were an Olympic Sport, the Valcartier Village
Vacances
in Quebec is where its champions would germinate. The
largest winter play park in North America, located 20 minutes from
downtwown Quebec City, has been developing and growing for the past
forty odd years,
adding features every year for family winter fun. Named for the valley
of the Jacques-Cartier River which flows nearby in summer and frozen
in winter, the Valcartier Vacation Village is a wonderland of 42 slides,
from the 110 foot hugh accelerating slide, the Everest, the highest
speed slide in America, for the mad rush of a single person innertube
to to
the Tornado, a giant inner tube that fits 8 people for a dizzying swirl
down the hill run, which can only be found at the Valcartier.
Rides to get to the top of the runs are accomplished by 17 mechanical
tow lifts for a ride in a towed inner tube to the top for the tansfer
to the ride tube for the down run. If you should get tube fever or a
less blood-rushing entertainment is an attraction, ice skating paths
wind through the park. No monotonous circles around a rink here, but
graceful pirouettes, or speed trial skakting can be found on what is
essentially the artifical frozen river which in summer forms the river
water cascade, at night until 10 pm lit party lights and music.
The Valcartier Vacation Village in the warmer months a water park,
with 35 water slides and two theme rivers and the new attraction of
a Pirate’s
Hideout, a playful pirate ship with sails and roaps, with water cannons,
water balloon grenades. The high speed slides of winter ice turn to the
splash of water. Beyond the bounds of the park, the Adventure Division
offers family river tour adventures and white water rafting in summer
and a campgriund with 700 camp sites. A cart track provides motorized
thrills both on winter snow and summer pavement. In winter the pirate
ship and ice castle become a children’s slide and play area.
Indoors
at Valcartier Vacation Village are shops and restaurants on streets
of Tyrolean and New England themes, an English
Pub, cafeteria and
bistro restaurant and race car video games in case the outdoor chill
calls for a warmer thrill escape. For family fun and dining, try the
"Snow and Fondue" Package. Admission prices vary according
to age the access and activities included, starting around $10 for
youngsters
on the slides
(glissades), up to $29 for the full adult package of attractions. The
park can sometimes be closed due to weather conditions, check the website,
but if you're already in Quebec in winter (see Quebec
Winter Carnaval), you'll pretty much know. © Bargain
