MUSEE
DU FORT – QUEBEC CITY
Diorama Military History Show
One
of the most popular attractions in Quebec City, partly due to its ideal
can’t miss it location in a 200 year old building interesting
in itself, and boasting almost a million visitors since it opened 45
years ago - despite its name, the Musée du Fort is not precisely
a museum, but rather a miniature historical diorama model and performance
show which takes its name from the fortification of the city in its
early days. For adults,
a brief history lesson than can make a visit to the real locations
of famous battles around Quebec City more interesting for and for
kids, an entertaining show of models,
lights and color.
After seating in the little theater looking on the detailed 400 square
foot panoramic diorama miniature model of the walled Quebec City, including
soldier regiments in battle positions, ships on the St Lawrence River,
and the outlying regions to Montmorency Falls as they were circa 1750
to 1775, a guide gives a brief introduction and the show starts. Lasting
30 minutes, told with voices, sounds, accompanying light effects, and
video projections, the presentation tells the story of the conflicts
between the English and the French for control of Quebec, then called
New France and the six military sieges of Quebec City, from the famous
battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1859 to the lesser known ill-fated
attempt by Benedict Arnold to seize the British controlled city in the
early days of the American Revolution in 1775 - before his more better
known later infamy.
Aside
from the diorama theater are a few other exhibits and artifacts relating
to the story of the timeline of the colony of New France. The shows
are presented in English on every hour, and in French on the half hour.
For a more
detailed look at the battle of the Plains of Abraham, you can visit
the Plains Of Abraham Museum located on the upper floors of the tourist
office
at the edge of the actual battlefield park outside the old city walls,
and for more soldiers and military stuff, the museum at the Citadel
Fortress
(see Quebec
Citadel Regiment Museum). If miniatures are your thing,
a miniature of modern Quebec City ond other metropolises built of Legos
blocks, the Ludavico miniature can
be found on the ground floors of to the Hilton Hotel.
